Title written in gilt within interlaced decoration of flowers, roses, lilies and oak leaves in the shape of a chalice coloured in red, blue, and green, with College arms in the stem and caption "Non sibi sed patriae".
Known at Eton as: Libro d'oro.
Names, place and date of production from colophon (fol. 127r).
List compiled by Edward Lyttleton Vaughan with the assistance of W. Barrand and W. Clay, lay clerks of Eton College.
Written out and illuminated by Graily Hewitt with the assistance of Helen Hinckley and Madelyn Walker, and finished in August 1923.
Fol. 1r has Greek motto in gilt: “Tōndedianthrōpōnaretan".
Roll of honour written on fol. 5r to 125r, in four columns: leaving date and house master's initials (in blue), rank (in red), name (in black; names of the fallen in gilt) and rank (in gilt); regiment (in red).
Fol. 125v-127r contain list of houses, explanation of some abbreviations and colophon.
Fol. 127v contains text of Sir Cecil Spring-Rice, 'I vow to thee my country' in black and gilt.
On fol. 128v: 'Floreat Etona'.
Contemporary full black morocco binding by Douglas Cockerell; boards decorated with gold-tooled squared strapwork design; gold-tooled arms of Eton College on front board within octagonal outer interlaced border and circular inner border or entwined roses with the petals picked out in red; strapwork design of back board incorporating the dates of the conflict and wreathed lettering "Floreat Etona"; spine decorated with interlaced strapwork design and roses in compartments formed by six raised bands; dentelles of black morocco with gold-tooled decoration and reddish morocco pastedowns; monogram stamps "DC" [Douglas Cockerell] on front dentelle and "W.H.S." on rear dentelle; metal clasps and cornerpieces engraved with decoration of strapwork and lilies.
