Originally attributed to Charles I, but, according to Madan (pp. 125-33), it was written by John Gauden, who probably included some authentic writings of the King.

Booklabel recording bequest to Eton College by Nicholas Mann in 1754.

Binding

17th century dark calf binding with gilt double fillet around the perimeter; rebacked in 20th century calf stained to match; smooth spine with seven compartments formed by gilt double fillets; gilt text block edges; without pastedowns.

ECL copy imperfect; with two plates only. The frontispiece following [A1] is a single plate with a portrait of the King in a medallion, unsigned, with manuscript caption within the platemark: "Charles by the grace of God Kinge of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, defendor of the faith, etc:". The other facing p. 216 is a smaller cruder portrait of the Prince of Wales in an oval medallion, unsigned, with engraved caption: "Natus Maij 29. Anº. 1630. Ætatis suæ 19."
