Porny Mr.
The elements of heraldry, containing the definition, origin, and historical account of that ancient, useful, and entertaining science. The divers sorts of coats-of-arms in use; with their essential and integral parts displayed separately. The several marks whereby bearers of the same coat-of-arms are distinguished from each other. The different kings of tinctures, lines, figures, charges, and ornaments used for coats-of-arms. The laws of heraldry; practical directions for marshalling coats-of-arms, and the order of precedence. The hatchments so clearly described, that the branch and title, the deceased was of, may be readily known. Embellished with several fine cuts, and twenty-four copper-plates, containing above five hundred different examples of escutcheons, arms, &c. and interspersed with the natural history, and allegorical signification of the several species of birds, beasts, fishes, vegetables, &c. comprised in this treatise. Textblock trimmed and sprinkled red (faded). Endpapers of undecorated paper; one flyleaf at both ends of the textblock.
(Copy 3) 18th-century speckled calfskin over pasteboards. Covers decorated with double blind fillets to form a border; centrepiece is a blind coat of arms with a stag head below a crown; transversal gilt fillets on board edges (now faded). Spine flat decorated with gilt fillets and titling over red label ("Elements of heraldry -- Porny"; "1777"). Textblock trimmed. Endpapers of undecorated paper; one flyleaf at both ends of the textblock.
