Content (description)

In centre are horses of the Sun in confusion and Phaethon falling headlong from the chariot on to a reclining male (river god), at whose feet grows a tree, to left of which stands a swan and a male making gestures of grief. Further left stands youth with tortoise at feet and three sisters of Phaethon turning into trees. Top left sits nude youth holding cornucopia, three putti in front of him. On right half-draped youth holding pedum stands and gestures to centre. At his feet recline two females, one holding cornucopia and surrounded by three putti. Behind him are seated youth and a female with billowing drapery. Top right is a female with billowing drape and two putti. At top, flanking the horses of the Sun, two putti ride to centre on horseback.
