Description
At each side of the relief is a panel, in which leafy cable surrounds a staff topped by a vase (?). In the centre, Aeneas, bearded and wearing a cuirass, with his head covered, stands to right to pour a libation at a blazing altar, while he draws out his sword with his left hand. He is followed by a youth in a tunic carrying a jug. On right behind the altar a youth points to a bearded man, who is opening an incense box. In the foreground before the altar a small bearded figure holds a knife ready at the sow's back. On right on a rock mound sits a female to right, but looking to the centre, one breast bare, a wreath on her head and holding a staff. Two draped men stand in the background to left of her, watching the sacrifice. On left sits a female to right, one breast bare, a diadem on her head and a Gorgon shield on the ground by her side. By her feet stands a boy, wearing Phyrgian cap- Ascanius. In the background stands a youth with his back turned to the viewer, and a bearded old man watching the sacrifice.
