Description
A tall altar, crowned with a pediment and acroteria. In the centre of the pediment in a shell are the busts of man and wife with their arms round one another; the shell is flanked by two great sea-monsters, which move outwards, but turn their heads to look to centre. At each side of the front grows a tall palm tree with a tiny cluster of leaves. In front of each trunk stands a Victory, about half the height of the tree. Each pulls open one leaf of a double door between them, by means of a ring in a Lion's mouth, two of which decorate each door. Over the door is a panel with the inscription: DIS MANIBUS/ C CLODIUS C F/ PRIMITIUS VIXIT ANN/ XI DIEBUS XXV/ C CLODIUS SECUNDUS/ ET CLODIA PRIMA F. Over the top of the panel is a further inscription: C CLODIUS APOLLINARIS/ VA V M VI D VIII.
