Description
The altar, which has an architectural design, is shown obliquely from left. At each side of the front stands a spiral column; they support a plain entablature and a pediment in which two birds peck at fruit in a central basket. The side of the altar is treated as a masonry wall and is recessed behind the column, to give the effect of a prostyle building. At the bottom centre is a small double door, with a large square inscription panel above. Two garlands hang from the capitals of the columns, one across the panel in a shallow curve, the other in a deep swag across the front of the door. A putto stands on each side of the door and touches the deep garland. The inscription in the panel is as follows: DIIS MANIBUS. VALERIAE/ THETIDI/M VALERIUS/STEPHANIO/CONIUGI SUAE/BENEMERENTI.
