Description

Content (description)

The judgement of Paris takes place on left. Paris sits in the centre of the scene on rocks to right. A putto stands at his knee and points to Venus on right, draped. A soldier stands a little in the background and gazes at Venus. The two other goddesses, both wearing armour and helmets, stand higher in the background. Goats, cattle and a sheep stand and lie on rocky lines in the background upper centre and on the left at the foot of the two trees. Two half-draped nymphs stand together bottom left with a dog lying at their feet.On right is the return of the goddesses to Olympus. Jupiter sits with his eagle upper right over the figure of the firmament (?) rising from clouds with a billow of drapery over his head. To right of Jupiter in the background are two females with billowing drapes, one of them Luna. Hermes with his petasos and caduceus stands on left. Two youths approach on horseback from left, followed by two others further left. In the centre a winged female flies to Jupiter, leading the three goddesses. At bottom left stands a nude warrior who gestures broadly to right with his shield-bearing arm. Above him a winged female points right but looks left, thus joining the two scenes. At bottom right recline two river gods, one with a branch, the other with a great rudder. A nymph reclines with them on left, her back turned to the viewer. At far right a nymph with bare breasts sits on a rock and looks up to the main scene; a bull lies on the ground by her. Above the ancient relief are added clouds and a zodiac.
