Fa 3 no. 5
Description
81: front. Two nude putti stand on the outspread wings of eagles, which are perching on rocks at the bottom corners, and hold a heavy garland of fruit, leaves and flowers. Beneath the garland a nymph with a billow of drapery rides on the tail of a bearded sea-man; on left a putto rides on a dolphin. Over the garland a nude man holding a staff leads a bull to right from behind a rock, on which stands a goat. At top centre is a square panel with the following inscription recorded very faintly: DIS MANIBUS/ HCAUDICYMF/ OVERIGEMINO/IULIA GEMFELLA/MATER FECIT. For another version of this inscription see no. 85.
79: left side. On right, the putto on the corner with the front holds one end of a garland, the other end hanging from the horn of a podgy head, perhaps that of a young satyr. Fillets flutter at the top. Over the garland two birds peck a cricket. Over them is an oenochoe. Beneath the garland a fox (?) rends a recumbent deer. Eagles stand at the bottom corners.
80: right side. As left side, but the garland hangs at the back on the horn of a bearded satyr head. Over the garland two birds move down as if pecking something, but there is nothing there. There is a patera above them. Below the garland a fox rends a springing deer. The illustrations of the sides show that the top of the altar slopes forward.
