Description

Content (description)

On left Prometheus sits to right and shapes the figure of a man on a pedestal in front of a tree. Athena stands on right and rests her hand on the man's head. To right a man lies lifeless on the ground as Hermes Psychopompus, armed with his caduceus, leads forth the winged figure of Psyche. On right stand three fates with a sundial, an unwound roll and a globe and spear. Further right is a scene in Vulcan's forge. According to Charbonneaux, four Cyclopes work the bonds with which Prometheus will be bound, while a fifth Cyclopes holds a torch and watches Prometheus. The right short side is now missing, but it is illustrated here at far right : on right Prometheus is chained to rocks and the eagle perches on his knee, pecking at his liver; Hercules approaches from left with his bow and lionskin to release him. A river god reclines bottom left and looks up at Prometheus.
