Statuette: young Eros enchained
assigned by cataloguer
Former title: "Statuette: putto enchained".
Description
A male child figure stands with his weight on his left leg, leaning his right elbow on a tree trunk, from which drapery hangs behind him and over his left arm. He wears a skull cap and has a chain strapped round his hips and down to his left ankle. He rubs his eye with his right hand.
statue
While the inscription of this drawing describes the statue as a "slave child" (fanciullo schiavo), this is actually a representation of young Eros, chastised for being naughty -- a frequent theme in literature and figurative art. Former cataloguers (e.g. Jean Sampson, 1974) believed the inscription to be correct and therefore the drawing is sometimes referred in secondary literature as "putto enchained" or similar.
