Sarcophagus: story of an Amazon (?)
assigned by cataloguer
Description
On left a female sits on a rock to left with a child on her knee, while two females mourn in the background and a male with his head covered (priest?) gestures on right. Next two Amazons with pelta shields lead a horse to right and the leading one joins hands with a bearded male wearing a cape and a Phrygian cap (Priam?). Four males wearing capes, two of them with caps, look on from the right. A fifth male stands in an attitude of grief, separated from the foregoing by a pelta shield. On right by an arch a female with her head covered sits in grief on a mound to right, a female attendant behind her; a figure in Phrygian garments attempts to comfort her. On far right, separated from the rest by a half-arch and a wall, seven Amazons prepare for battle, fitting on their armour and on far right, steadying a horse.
