Description
Content (description)
A hermaphrodite, wearing a cloak clasped at the neck and falling in folds behind and with his head covered, stands facing the viewer and holds a winged putto on his left arm. The putto reaches towards a herm on right and touches the crown on the bearded head. The hermaphrodite rests his right elbow on the pedestal of a statue of Diana carrying a deer on her shoulder. Behind this scene runs a wall, over which can be seen a sanctuary. On right stands an Ionic column decorated with a fillet and thyrsus (?) and surmounted by a globular vase. By it on left grows a gnarled old oak tree, also bound with fillets. One of its two branches spreads to left over a round building, the facade of which is composed of columns supporting an entablature pierced by square windows and topped with merlons. This unroofed building encloses a tall baetyl, to which rod-like objects are attached by fillets.
