Description

Content (description)

In the centre, bearded nude Hercules reclines, holding in his right hand his club, which a putto tries to pull from him. A second putto moves right pointing. Part of Hercules' left arm is hidden behind a tree trunk on right. From each side a Victory flies towards the centre but looks back over her shoulder, holding a fillet in both hands. Beneath each Victory lies a corselet and two shields (?). At each end a putto stands, cross-legged, leaning on a staff or up-turned torch.

History and association

Object history note

Bm 1-145 is of Drawings of antiquities in the Villa Pamfilia by Campiglia. The introduction to the section on the Villa Pamfilia in Fa 3 (was Fa2) reads as follows:
'Tutti i bassi rilievi che messe nelle mura, o guardati nella Orangeria &ct della Villa Pamfilia, sono disegnati et si trovano nel mio libro, fuori de seguenti, che sono omessi per le ragione chi descritte.' This seems to refer to Topham's copy of G.G. Rossi's book which can be found in ECL Bi. 2.17
