Description
Content (description)
Ariadne lies on the ground left of centre, in front of a bacchic procession which moves right; almost all of the figures in the procession look up to left as if at the approach of Dionysus. A winged putto and a maenad stand over her and point to her. The procession is headed by a young Pan and an old Pan who holds a drinking vessel to his lips as he moves along; a lion lies on the ground by their feet. They are followed by a figure playing crotola, a satyr wearing a loose drape, and a maenad with billowing drapery blowing a horn. Next, by Ariadne's head, stands a satyr with loose drapery, holding a cornucopia. Two females stand in the background behind the Ariadne group, then Pan dances along in front of two centaurs who blow horns.
