Description
56 and 57: Indian triumph of Dionysus. Dionysus stands in his chariot and is pulled to right by two elephants, on the backs of which sit youths; beneath the belly of the elephant in the foreground is a tiger. Dionysus is attended by two maenads, a satyr and a Victory, who holds a palm branch in the background. A putto rides on a lion in front of the elephants and in the background goes a maenad carrying a garland and a Pan. A cista lies on the ground in the foreground. In front two captives ride on the back of a camel, behind a maenad who blows a curved horn. At her feet stands a putto. On right a satyr, wearing a garland across his torso, turns to right; a bearded male stands on his left in the background. A draped female, her back to the viewer, pours a libation at a flaming altar on right, before a statue of Athena fully armed.
58: on left is a dextrarum iunctio; the man on left holds a roll, the woman has her head covered. Between them in the foreground stands a putto holding a torch; a woman stands in the background, her head covered. On right is another bacchic group. A centaur, carrying a krater on his shoulder and with a bearded male reclining on his back, pulls a carriage to left, in which sits a half-draped female. A putto flies to her breast. In the foreground a putto leads a lion to left.
59 and 60: Endymion. A half-draped female stands on left leaning her elbow on a pillar. A bearded shepherd sits to right on a rock mound, leaning on a thunder-bolt-shaped staff. On the ground at his feet are two sheep and two dogs. Over his head three sheep lie on a ground line by a genius loci on right, beneath whom are also a cow and a sheep. A winged female catches the bridle of two horses, which are ridden by a putto and pull the chariot of Luna to left. She descends from the chariot to right, led by a putto. A second putto flies to Endymion, who lies asleep; an old male stands over him, resting one hand on his elbow. A genius and nymph recline on a rock above. On far right Luna departs with a prancing horse (her chariot is not shown). A putto flies before her to right , but both look back to left. A half-draped youth reclines beneath the horse's hooves.
