Identification
Vase on triangular base
assigned by cataloguer
Description
The globular vase has a narrow neck and low foot. Its body is decorated with a band of strigil fluting. In place of handles there are two snaky figures. The vase stands on a triangular base, the central panel of which shows a draped maenad dancing. Across the top is a frieze of masks and vine swags, with Ammon heads at the corners. Along the bottom runs a frieze of garlands hanging from fleshless boukrania. Up the sides of the central panel on the corners, a winged sphinx protome stands on a ram's head: from the sphinx's radiate crown rises a floral member, out of which emerges a victory with wings spread.
