Description

Content (description)

5: On left stands Mars, wearing a corselet and helmet, holding a spear in his right hand and an oval shield, which rests on the ground, in his left. On the ground behind him stands a round shield. On right stands Hermes, nude, with his petasus, caduceus and a drape over his left arm. He holds out in his right hand a small bag of money. The two gods face one another. In the centre an altar stands on a rock pedestal.
6: To right of centre is an altar, set obliquely, with a tree directly behind it. On right stands nude Apollo, holding his bow in his left hand, a twig in his right. Behind him on far right stands a tripod with a sphere on top. He faces left as Artemis runs towards him from left. She wears boots and a girt-up tunic and holds out her bow in her left hand, while raising her right hand to take an arrow from her quiver. At her feet in the background lies a boar; a dog runs by her side.
7: Two goddesses face one another across a three-sided altar with concave sides, on which a flame burns on a high pedestal. On right the draped goddess stands with her left arm akimbo, holding out a flower in her right hand. On left, Fortuna, also draped, holds a cornucopia of fruit on her left arm and a rudder behind her in her right hand.
8: Silvanus and Hercules face one another across a garlanded round altar, behind which grows a pine tree. On right bearded Silvanus, wearing a wreath and an animal skin round his neck and over his left arm and shoulder, holds a pine branch in his left hand and holds out an angular knife in his right. A dog sits at his feet and looks up at him. On left Hercules, with his back to the viewer, raises his right foot on a rock. He wears his lionskin over his head and down his back and holds out his club in his right hand. A pig with a fillet round its belly stands to right in front of the altar.
