Description
The Arch of Marcus Aurelius, Tripoli: One face of arch, which is elaborately decorated. Fluted pilasters flank the passage way and support a high entablature, which is decorated with large palmettes, which recur elsewhere. Sections of the entablature project - in the centre and at the sides; the gaps between the projecting parts have two tiny nude winged figures, standing. Beneath them are portrait busts in tondoes. In the spandrels are Victories, over a basket and a bird. Up the outer edges are pilasters decorated with floral scrolls, which rise out of a vase. In relief near the foot of each pier is a group of man, woman and child.
