Description
Arch of Marcus Aurelius, Tripoli: Up each outside edge is a pilaster decorated with floral scroll and surmounted by a tall and elaborate capital of three tiers of leaves, which supports the entablature. In the spandrels a warrior-female drives towards the centre in a chariot drawn by a lion. Beneath the wheels of the chariot are an elaborate helmet, a shield (?) and two spears. In relief on the piers are groups of man, woman and child, as on the other face (Bn 10. 64). Above each group is a trophy in relief, and a portrait bust in a tondo.
