Comments

The volume Bn 11, entitled Vase antiche, is devoted entirely to vases, some antique, but mostly fanciful products after the antique. A large number of the engravings have the initials AE. V and the representation of fanciful vases fall into three groups, distinguished by the inscriptions (a) sic Romae antiqui sculptores ex aere et marmore faciebant,
(b) ex Romanis antiquitatibus,
(c) Romae ab antiquo repertum

Description

Content (description)

The vase stands on a fluted flaring foot. Round the bottom of the body is a cluster of acanthus leaves, from which rise flutings. Above them is a narrow band of overlapping shields and then a broad frieze, above which there are convex flutings on the shoulder. The narrow neck is decorated with leaves, the lip flares. The lid is knobbed and fluted. The handles are formed by serpents, which coil on the shoulder and reach up to devour cockleshells on the lip. From the tails of the serpents hang the garlands which occupy the frieze on the body; they are attached to a mask in the centre of the upper border in the frieze. From this mask also hangs a boat-like object on a fillet. Beneath the handles are masks with snaky hair.
Beneath the jug: EX ROMANIS ANTIQUITATIBUS 1539 LV (in a cartouche) below the amphora.
