V and the representation of fanciful vases fall into three groups, distinguished by the inscriptions (a) sic Romae antiqui sculptores ex aere et marmore faciebant,
(b) ex Romanis antiquitatibus,
(c) Romae ab antiquo repertum

Description
The amphora has a high foot, a very tall slender neck with decoration of leaves, high and elaborate handles, also with leaf ornament, and a knobbed lid. Round the body there are two friezes, with fluting on the shoulder and at the bottom of the belly. In the lower frieze eagles stand with outspread wings beneath garlands, over which there are sphinxes and insects; between the eagles, vases hang from the garlands on fillets. In the upper frieze is a deer on a burning altar, which is flanked by garlands hanging vertically; below the handles are bearded masks, crowned with wreaths and with a cockle-shell as chin.
