Comments

The volume Bn 11, entitled Vase antiche, is devoted entirely to vases, some antique, but mostly fanciful products after the antique. A large number of the engravings have the initials AE. V and the representation of fanciful vases fall into three groups, distinguished by the inscriptions (a) sic Romae antiqui sculptores ex aere et marmore faciebant,
(b) ex Romanis antiquitatibus,
(c) Romae ab antiquo repertum

Description

Content (description)

The ovoid body stands on a low flared foot. At the base of the body are acanthus leaves, from which rise convex flutes, every third flute shorter than the rest. The rest of the body is divided into two zones; lions heads hold garlands with fillets flying in the lower, in the upper is a boukranion flanked by floral scrolls. The tall neck is decorated with leaves; the flaring lip is fluted and beaded. The handle is formed by a panther/lion which stands on its hind legs on a Pan mask and rests its forepaws on the lip, thrusting its head forward.
