Comments

The volume Bn 11, entitled Vase antiche, is devoted entirely to vases, some antique, but mostly fanciful products after the antique. A large number of the engravings have the initials AE. V and the representation of fanciful vases fall into three groups, distinguished by the inscriptions (a) sic Romae antiqui sculptores ex aere et marmore faciebant,
(b) ex Romanis antiquitatibus,
(c) Romae ab antiquo repertum

Description

Content (description)

The body of the amphora, which stands on a low foot, is divided into three zones. At the bottom are convex flutings. In the central frieze putti hold garlands and over the central garland is the wolf suckling the twins. In the upper zone is a sacrifice scene with a bull brought before a blazing altar. In this zone are two bearded satyr masks, from behind which the handles rise in snaky undulations. On the concave neck is a triton. The flaring lip is fluted. The lid is decorated with leaves and on the knob stands a draped female holding a cornucopia and a handful of corn (?)
