Comments

The volume Bn 11, entitled Vase antiche, is devoted entirely to vases, some antique, but mostly fanciful products after the antique. A large number of the engravings have the initials AE. V and the representation of fanciful vases fall into three groups, distinguished by the inscriptions (a) sic Romae antiqui sculptores ex aere et marmore faciebant,
(b) ex Romanis antiquitatibus,
(c) Romae ab antiquo repertum

Description

Content (description)

The ovoid body stands on a two tiered foot. On the shoulder is a band of convex fluting and garlands hang round the body from a crab. The neck is plain, the trefoil lip fluted and beaded. The handle starts as a clawed foot perched on top of a horned and bearded mask on the shoulder; the curve of the handle is decorated with leaves and there is a protome of a lion at its junction with the lip. On the shoulder beneath the spout is a horned and hairy mask with leafy beard.
