Silver vase decorated with masks and sea-monsters
assigned by cataloguer
The volume Bn 11, entitled Vase antiche, is devoted entirely to vases, some antique, but mostly fanciful products after the antique. A large number of the engravings have the initials AE. V and the representation of fanciful vases fall into three groups, distinguished by the inscriptions (a) sic Romae antiqui sculptores ex aere et marmore faciebant,

Description
The deep bowl has a hemi-spherical body, a concave upper part with flaring rim, and a hemi-spherical lid. There are two zones of ornament on the bowl and these are shown on the left, projected out from the side of the vase. In the zone around the belly of the vase are sea-monsters in facing pairs among waves: a sea-bull and sea-griffin, a sea-tiger and sea-horse. The head of a dolphin appears over the back of each monster. In the zone on the concave surface above are masks and animals, some with explanatory inscriptions above. From left there are maenad mask with thyrsos and tympanum, VER/VENERIS above; then a deer and an empty cornucopia above; a satyr mask to left and a pedum, AESTAS/PANIS DEI above; a pine cone on a dish (?)above a deer reclining on rocks, against which is a Pan pipe, SOLSTITIUM/AESTIVUM above; a maenad mask to right with ivy wreath and thyrsos, AUTUMNUS LIBERI P above; a panther stands and looks upwards; a maenad mask to left with thyrsos, HIEMS LIBERAE DEAE above; goat stands to left. At side on right is a further inscription, perhaps incomplete at right edge: SOLSTITIU/HIBERN VEI/ TROPAE CHI/ MERINAE. COCK EXC.
