Content (description)

The tomb is shown in its actual state with a herdsman and bull in the foreground. Beneath the frieze of boukrania is a panel with the inscription: CAECILIAE/ Q CRETICI F/ METELLAE CRASSI
Along the lower edge of the engraving: Metellae Uxoris Crassi sepulchrum, editiore Appiae viae loco conspicuum. Est igitur opus ampliore ac rotunda mole, ex lapide quadrato/ Tiburtino; marmore Zophoro trophaeis et boum capitibus insigni, vulgo notum. Ut autem, antiquitate, hippodromo Caracallae,/ Tullique testimonio clarum est; ita, totidem verborum sententiam Echo quinques reddente, omnibus admirabile prope, videatur/ Antonii Lafrerii Romae 1549
Over tomb : AD METELLAE ECHO/ CRETICUS HIC NATAM CRASSUS HUMASSE IUGALEM/ FERTUR ET HINC QUESTUS CONGEMINARE LOCUM.
