Content (description)

The five obelisks are shown with all details of decoration, hieroglyphics and crests, with measurements and scales by their sides. They are not all drawn to the same scale. Beneath each obelisk is a note giving a brief history of it. These notes will not be quoted here.
From left are shown the obelisks in the Piazza del Popolo, in the Piazza di S. Maria Maggiore, in the Piazza di S. Maria della Minerva, in the Piazza di S. Pietro in Vaticano and in the Piazza di S. Giovanni Laterano.
In a title scroll held by a flying putto above the obelisks is the inscription: DISEGNO/DELLE/CINQUE GUGLIE PRINCIPALI/CHE SI VEDONO IN ROMA/ALZATE IN HONORE DELLA S. CROCE/ CON LE GIUSTE MISURE DI CIASCUNA PUBBLICATE DALLE/STAMPE/DI MATTEO GREGORIO ROSSI ROMANO/ nel 1688/ con licenza de Superior. con Privil Apost.
