Description

Content (description)

The candelabrum is very ornate. At the bottom is a three-sided base with horned and bearded masks for feet, between which hang garlands. Over each mask crouches a Pan with his hands behind his back. Above the base sphinxes with scrolls instead of legs sit back to look back to look around a central pillar, which supports a 'casket' ornamented with arches, garlands and shells. At the top a Pan and Panesse copulate.
The panel on the three-sided base in this view shows the fight between Hercules and the Centaur Nessus in a landscape.
Beneath the candelabrum is the inscription: Antiquam hanc lampadem/e Museo Colbertino allatam/ Domino Harleo inter [Greek] sua/reponendam D D Matthaeus Prior
