Description

Content (description)

The Bacchic figure scene on the bucket is shown as if opened out. On left, a satyr, wearing a loin cloth and carrying a pedum and basket, follows a maenad to right. She carries a tympanum and turns to gesture to the satyr. In centre Pan with Pan pipes and a maenad, draped and holding a pipe, gesture to one another. On right a satyr with a pedum holds a bowl into which a maenad pours the contents of a jug. At the same time she leans on a column, right and turns towards a draped maenad with a thyrsus on right. The latter raises a large drinking bowl. A panther bounds behind the column. Across the top of the scene are leafy swags. Gaps in the field are filled with leafy branches, bunches of grapes etc.
Above the vase is the inscription: Vas ex integro Granato (Italice Granata, Anglice Garnet) Venetiis in D. Marci Thesauro asservatum.
Below the vase: Imagines in eiusdam vasis circumferentia incisae.
