Identification
Venus and Cupid with three amorous couples
assigned by cataloguer
Description
On right three couples sport in a 'bath-tub' sarcophagus, which has rings at the top left and right and a lion's head with a ring at centre bottom. Two putti fly overhead aiming arrows at the couples. On left nude Venus approaches, accompanied by Cupid, who carries a wine jar, and a nude male who carries a great urn on his head, steadying himself with a staff. The sarcophagus is in a slightly sunken area down two steps. In the background is a wall, in which are niches flanked by pilasters. Distant buildings can be seen through a small arch on right. On the ground left of Venus lies a caduceus.
