Content (description)

The oval gem is set on a rectangular panel. On the gem is a figure scene. A putto with his back to the viewer holds the mane of a lion, which moves left, and looks up at a maenad, who moves left by the side of the lion carrying a tympanum. A nude female on right looks down at the putto. In the exergue is the Greek inscription: AMEZANA.E (?). Beneath on left an outline of the gem shows its actual size.
Along the lower edge in a shaped panel is the inscription: OMNIA VINCIT AMOR/ALEXANDRI SUMMI GRAECI SCULPTORIS OPUS/SARDONYCHE EXCISUM/ APUD EXC. D. HENRICUM HOWARD/ VICECOMITEM DE MORPETH.
