Description
Content (description)
The tondo relief shows the head of a philosopher in profile to right. He has a fillet on his hair and a long curly beard. Beneath his chin is the inscription APXIMH. Marked 1.
Beneath, marked 2, is the coin, of which both obverse and reverse are shown, linked by a band marked AE. On one side stands Athena, with helmet, spear and shield. Round the flan is the inscription APXIMHDHE. On the other side is the head of a bearded philosopher in profile to right.
Beneath this whole panel is ARCHIMEDES
Along the lower edge is the inscription:
1. Archimedis effigies marmorea in veteri anaglypho Romae asservato/eiusdemque nomine insignito.
2. Eadem in antiquo numismate ereo. Obiit Archim. Olym. 142 anno ante Aeram Chr.an. 212
