The head is of a bearded man with his gaze cast down, his hair combed forward beneath a fillet. The head was broken from the body at the neck. It sits on a turned pedestal.
Inscribed lower left: G. Vertue Sculp.
Inscribed along lower edge: HOMERUS De aereo capite olim penes illustriss. Comitem Arundellium, nunc in Musaeo/ celeberrimi Viri, Richardi Mead M.D.
Antiquissima Homeri statua egregii operis, ut describit Cedrenus, Constantinopoli, Iustiniano/ Imperante, incendio periisse dicitur: statuae autem illius hoc esse caput, ex ruderibus postea/ feliciter servatum, cum ex oris figura et lineamentis, tum ex manifestis liquefacti metalli indiciis, conjectari licet.
