Description

Content (description)

The satyr steps forward with his left leg, carrying on his shoulders the nude infant Dionysus, who wears an ivy wreath. The satyr turns his head to look up to the child, who holds a bunch of grapes in each hand. The satyr holds grapes in his right hand and steadies the child with the other. By his left leg is a tree trunk, on top of which is draped a goat skin. A Pan-pipe rests on the trunk and a pedum hangs on the vine which grows round it. The group stands in a niche.
