Content (description)

The bust of Claudius wearing a radiate crown is held on the back of an eagle with outspread wings. The eagle holds a thunderbolt in its claws above a mound of arms and armour topped by a globe.
Inscribed just below the base, lower right: 1657/ Gio.Batta/Galestruzzi fece.
Inscribed along the lower edge:
CONSECRATIO CLAUDII IMPERATORIS/Claudius in Deos relatus/ Insana antiquitas/ quae vel socordiam divinitate donabat/ Aquila/ infamiam rapti Ganimedis hoc modo assumpto conduplicat/ tunc foeda nunc demens// Sed admiranda artificis praestantia,/& Columnensium Principum faustitas,/qui tantum marmor in Marinensi ditione defossum possident,/ utrique dedecus in gloriam vertunt,/ Hinc paribus meritis ambo tolluntur in auras,/ Augustus Caelo dignus & illa Iove.
