Description
The reliefs recount the story of Meleager. On left by a tree he has killed his uncle in their dispute over the boar trophy; two men look on. Next, two Furies stand in the background, one brandishing a torch, as Althea plunges Meleager's log into the flames on an altar, turning away to right. On right Meleager lies dead on a couch with four mourners round him, two of whom point back to the burning of the log. At the foot of the couch is his shield; his helmet is on a footstool and his scabbard by it. On right at the head of the couch, a hound raises its head and wails. On far right Atalanta stands dejectedly to right, framed in an arch.
