Content (description)

A draped female stands at each end facing outwards. On right Pluto drives off with Proserpine in his quadriga to right over the recumbant figure of Tellus. Hermes, half-draped, leads the way and a putto flying over the horses points the way with a blazing torch. In the centre in front of a curtain, Athena and two nymphs watch their departure. On left Ceres with a blazing torch drives in a chariot drawn by dragons to right past a tree trunk.
Large inscription beneath which begins:
ILL.MO DNO MEO OBSERVABILI/FRANCISCO PICCOLOMINEO/ Bernardinus Capitellus D. Thereafter follows a dedicatory address which places the sarcophagus in 'aed Bentivoli Quirinali'
