Description

Content (description)

The sarcophagus is complete with its lid, on which are the Seasons, reclining, each holding a cornucopia of fruit, to which fly putti. On the body of the sarcophagus, Ceres sits in the centre on a cista to right and bids farewell to Proserpine (?) and Triptolemus, who is about to drive off in a chariot drawn by dragons. Dionysus leans on Ceres' shoulder on left; there is a vine by him. Three females, a male and a child stand on right. On left a female holds the reins of horses, which have just been driven up by a female over a recumbent female figure. On lid and top of body is a Greek inscription.
Inscribed beneath the sarcophagus: Ex Museo Nicolai Joseph Foucault comitis Consistoriani.
Lower right a scale in French and inscribed: F. Herting del et Sc.
