Description

Content (description)

The gem is set on a pedestal in a niche framed with mouldings. The actual size of the gem is shown at bottom left with the exlpanatory note 'Gemmae antiquae magnitudo'. On the oval gem is shown Meleager, nude with a drape on his shoulder, standing on left holding two double-ended spears. On right are two dogs, one sniffing the ground, the other sitting and looking up at Meleager. In the background on right is a rock mound on which are an altar and a herm of a female figure holding two blazing torches. On the rock are the heads of a boar and a deer and a garland.
Inscribed in the exergue of the gem: Eques Petrus hed Ghezzius delin. Vincentius Franceschini sculp. Rome.
Inscribed on the edge of the frame, lower left: Hier. Eques. Odam inv. et scul. ornam.
Inscribed on the pedestal: MELEAGER/ OPUS ELEGANTISSIMUM/ ONYCHI INCISUM./ EX DACTYLIOTHECA PHILIPPI STOSCHII.
