Identification
Vase with marine thiasos
assigned by cataloguer
Unlike the rest of the album Bn 2 there is no clear indication that this is from the Palazzo Barberini
Description
The vase is tall and jug-lke, but has no handle; it is perhaps trefoil-lipped. On the shoulder is concave fluting, which is separated by a strong horizontal moulding from the broad band below, decorated in relief with a marine thiasos. The bottom of the body is decorated with leaves. The vase stands on a flaring foot. Of the marine thiasos is shown a nymph on the coils of a sea-centaur, with a dolphin below; a putto flies to right towards the next group. An arabesque with grotesque head projects at left at the top of the figured frieze.
