Description
The whole relief of a Bacchic wine vat sarcophagus is shown, as if opened out. At left and right are lion heads, their mouths open to show the bottom teeth and the tongue. In the centre nude Dionysus, with wreath and thyrsos, rides to right on the back of a prancing tiger. A satyr follows holding its tail, and behind him a satyr plays pipes and holds a thyrsos. The tiger is preceded by a leaping Pan, who holds a pedum. In the background there are four subsidiary figures. On the ground beneath the scene there are a snake, an infant Pan, a tiger, a putto playing a pipe and a recumbant goat. On far left beyond the lion head, a satyr dances; he holds a putto on one arm, a large bearded mask on the other. Beneath the lion-head two satyrs remove a stone from Pan's hoof. At far right a half-draped female turns her back to the viewer. Beneath the lion-head Pan has intercourse with a goat turned on its back.
