Title

A new map of part of North America from the latitude of 40 to 68 degrees. Including the late discoveries made on board the Furnace Bomb ketch in 1742. And the western rivers & lakes falling into Nelson River in Hudson's Bay

Comments

In Arthur Dobbs, 'An Account of the Countries Adjoining to Hudson's Bay'. This map is part of the argument that ensued between Arthur Dobbs and Christopher Middleton. Dobbs was a wealthy Irish Landowner who challenged the Hudson Bay Company for their lack of action in trying to locate a North West Passage. Expeditions sent in 1737 and under Middleton in 1741 failed to find a Passage. Suspecting foul play on the part of the Company he launched a tirade of attacks, this map being one of them. La France was an Indian fur trapper who switched from serving the French to the Hudson Bay Company.
