Title
The courses of the rivers Rappahanock and Potowmack, in Virginia, as surveyed according to order in the years 1736 & 1737
Comments
In 1649 whilst in exile in France, Charles II granted the region of Virginia known as the Northern Neck to some of his loyal supporters. By 1722 Thomas Lord Fairfax had inherited so much of this land that his grant amounted to over 5 million acres. The Virginia Assembly questioned the title and boundaries of these lands which centred around the location of the headwaters of several rivers. A Commission was set up to survey the region. The Fairfax party produced this fine map. It is an example of the second state of five.
