Description

Silver gilt chalice engraved on the bowl with the figure of the Good Shepherd

Comments

'PLAIN BOWL, engraved with the figure of the Good Shepherd; mounted on a "Gothic" stem and hexagonal foot.
Height, 8 5/8 in.
The bowl is 1635-6 (maker's mark illegible).
The stem and foot are Victorian.'

The chalice is made in the medievalist style favoured by Bishop Lancelot Andrewes (1555-1626). The plain bowl is finely engraved with the figure of Christ, depicted as the Good Shepherd. The Gothic tracery is rare for this date but considered to be original.
