Description
Circular, silver parcel-gilt dish; with multiple figures in high relief
Comments
This virtuoso dish, embossed in high relief with the biblical story of Joseph and his brethren, is typical of court patronage during the reign of Manuel I (reigned 1495–1521). The design is sculpted using the repoussé technique, which involves shaping the metal by hammering from the reverse.
In about 1730, an earlier central medallion was replaced with the existing one, which is engraved with the arms of Gent impaling Eeles. The replacement medallion is probably taken from a cane handle.
