Oak and glass table display case, rectangular form, sloping hinged top, three glazed panels
This is one of a pair of similar display cases. However, they come from a series of cases, all of a similar design, of which there are three distinct types. It is possible that they were commissioned to house parts of the Myers Collection for use in School Library (in the Macnaghten Room), where the collection was displayed from c.1908 to 1935.
In 1904, architects were invited to submit designs for a New School Hall and Library at Eton. Described as ‘the finest public school memorial put up after the South African war', School Hall and School Library were built between 1906 and 1908 as a memorial to the 129 Etonians killed in the Boer War (1899-1902). After a competition limited to Old Etonian architects, the designs of Laurence Kirkpatrick Hall were chosen. Hall worked in partnership with Sidney Kyffin Greenslade (who had formerly worked for E.A. Rickards on the grand baroque town hall in Cardiff).
The new School Hall and adjoining domed building of School Library were completed between 1906 and 1908. The buildings were in brick, with ornamental stone dressings and elaborate internal plasterwork, reminiscent of 18th-century French architecture.
