Description
Arts and Crafts beechwood ladder back chair, in the manner of Ernest Gimson, with turned finials and four splats, square seat with petit point floral upholstery on a cream and brown ground
Comments
This chair is after a design by the celebrated Arts and Crafts designer Ernest Gimson (1864-1919). The original model of these chairs had rush seats.
Ladderback chairs (so-called because of the construction of the backs) started to be made across Britain in the seventeenth century. In the 1890's Ernest Gimson, a London architect and designer, adapted and simplified the vernacular chairs he found still being made in the Cotswolds.
After his death in 1919, production of his furniture was continued by one of the craftsmen at his workshop, Edward Gardiner.
