Display 19: Joseph Banks's Cabin of HMB Endeavour, caption Natural History Museum, Eton:
‘The replica of Joseph Banks's Cabin is based upon research by Antonia Macarthur, historian of the HM Bark Endeavour Foundation. The replica was built in Fremantle in Western Australia. It sailed to England in 1996-7. Banks's cabin, below the Quarter Deck, opened onto the Great Cabin and was six feet square. In fact Banks was over six feet tall and slept in the Great Cabin. The authentic bureau was purchased from the replica, the ink-stand is dated 1750'.

This piece is from a group of five items which were supplied by the antique dealers W R Harvey & Company to HMB Endeavour in Fremantle, Australia. The Endeavour replica was built as an almost exact copy of Capt. Cook's first boat on the maiden voyage of which he discovered Australia. The Endeavour replica was completed in 1994 and visited many ports including Greenwich next to the Cutty Sark in March 1997. It was decided it was not practical to keep valuable items on board the replica ship and the company was asked to find a home for the group of furniture. All these pieces were selected as having been made prior to Cook's first trip which left Plymouth in 1768 and have been identified as typical of the items that Capt. Joseph Banks, an established Botanist, would have taken on board from their private furnishings at home.”
