Incised lettering below portrait: 'Right Hon W E Gladstone / Born Dec 29 1809. Educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. Married in 1859 / Catherine Glynne, daughter of Sir Stephen Glynne of Hawarden Castle. Sat in the House of Commons / from 1832 to 1895 as member successively for Newark, Oxford University, South Lancashire, Greenwich, / and Midlothian. Four times Prime Minister. A voluminous writer on classics and theology.'
